Know your skin type

Dry skin

Dry skin tends to be tight and flaky. It lacks the skin’s natural lubricant known as sebum. It also lacks the ability to retain moisture. Avoid using soap to cleanse your face and opt for a cream cleanser instead. Toners are not necessary. Look for a rich moisturiser that doesn’t feel greasy on the skin. Steer clear of harsh exfoliators and use hydrating face masks regularly.

Oily skin

Characterized by overactive sebaceous glands, oily skin tend to look shiny and prone to pimples, blackheads and whiteheads. Pores also appear much larger in those who have oily skin. Oily skin will age well as the skin will always be hydrated. To keep oil secretions at bay, cleanse the skin using an oil or gel cleanser. Products that leave the skin feeling taut and dehydrated should also be avoided as they cause the upper layers of the skin to shrink. This restricts oil flow through the pores, resulting in blocked pores and break-outs. Use oil-free moisturizers.

Combination skin

Sometimes caused by using harsh preparations that disrupt the normal balance of the skin, combination skin is oily around the nose, chin and forehead, and dry on the cheeks. You don’t need numerous products to treat different areas of your face. Use a gentle soap-free cleansing wash. Apply moisturizer avoiding the T-zone which will receive sufficient hydration from within. Alternatively, use an oil-free moisturizer.

Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is often caused by using skincare products and cosmetics with harsh ingredients. It can also be caused by stress. Usually, it’s because the skin has an overactive immune system or supersensitive nerve endings which are triggered by the slightest irritant. Use skincare products which are hypoallergenic and allergy tested. Also avoid products that contain irritants such as fragrance, alcohol, chemical sunscreens and colourants. Stick with cream cleansers. Do not use abrasive exfoliators or products that have alpha hydroxy acids (AHA). Also, do not let sensitive skin become dry as excess moisture loss can lead to heightened sensitivity.

Problem skin

Stress and hormonal changes are the main culprits for triggering serious break-outs. It can be treated with antibiotic creams, oral antibiotics, the Pill, or in severe cases, Roacutane.
